General History

The dory type boat originated along the Massachusetts coast about 1726 as an off-beach fishing vessel.  The "modern" dory developed in 1858 when dory fishing at sea replace fishing directly off the schooners' decks.  They were then called bank dories because they were stowed in banks, or nests on deck.  Development continued in the New England states and Maritime provinces of Canada.  They were the first mass produced boats as they needed to be identical on a given schooner for proper nesting.  They were constructed by family companies such as Hiram Lowell from Amesbury, Massachusetts.  This model is of the older type with a pronounced and prettier sheer than the more modern boats.
